Best Brevard Farmers Markets

Fresh produce, local honey, handmade crafts - is there anything better than wandering down through the booths of your local farmers market? In the words of Lewis Grizzard, “It’s difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a homegrown tomato.”

As much as I love getting out in the Florida sunshine and supporting our local community, remembering which farmers market is on which day can be tricky to track. That’s why I tossed together this list of some of my favorite spots.

Downtown Melbourne Farmers Market

Every Saturday & Sunday in Downtown Melbourne from 10am-3pm, over 75 local vendors get together. You’ll find everything from furniture to organic dog treats! If you’re like me and always seem to forget to have cash, they even have an ATM.

Saturday & Sunday: 10am-3pm
1900 South Harbour City Blvd.
Melbourne, FL 32901

Space Coast Farmers Market

One farmers market. Two great locations. You can catch the Space Coast Farmers Market every Saturday in Cocoa Beach from 10am-4pm or every Sunday in Rockledge from 10am-3pm. Make sure to try some unique treats like a slice of the “St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake” or “JJ’s Maple Cotton Candy”!

Saturday: 10am-4pm
First United Methodist Church
3300 N Atlantic Ave.
Cocoa Beach, FL 32931

Sunday: 10am-3pm
Larry Schultz Park
2560 S. Fiske Blvd.
Rockledge, FL  32955

The Market at Rockledge Gardens

Can’t bear to leave your four legged friend at home? Rockledge Gardens is dog friendly! (*leash required please) Every Wednesday and Saturday from 10am-3pm you can pick up some awesome produce from local Florida and North Carolina growers. (Insider tip: The second Saturday of every month is “Farm & Friends Market” which has extra vendors and crafters!)

Wednesday & Saturday: 10am-3pm
2153 US-1
Rockledge, FL 32955

Titusville Farmers Market

For my North Brevard dwelling friends, check out the Titusville Farmers Market every Sunday & Monday from 10am-4pm. On Sundays the market is outdoors, but on Monday you can beat the heat indoors (by Bealls).

Sunday & Monday: 10am-4pm
Searstown Mall
3550 S Washington Ave.
Titusville, FL 32780

Satellite Beach Farmers Market

My beachside friends just can’t stop buzzing about the Satellite Beach Farmers Market! Every Thursday from 10am-5pm at Pelican Beach Park you will find specialty “from the ground” products, along with soaps, herbs, olives, and more. If you’re suffering from seasonal allergies I recommend the local raw honey. Ingesting local honey is thought to make you less-sensitive to the pollen resulting in fewer allergy symptoms!

Thursday: 10am-5pm
Pelican Beach Park
1525 Hwy A1A
Satellite Beach, FL 32937

Renninger's Flea and Farmers Market

Okay so maybe Renninger’s is a little more than a farmers market. Operating as “The Space Coast’s Largest Open Air Shopping Attraction” since 1987, Renninger’s Flea and Farmers Market is a Brevard staple. With more than 800 booths covering 2.4 miles, there is something for everyone! You can stop by rain or shine every Friday, Saturday, & Sunday between 9am-4pm. If you’re looking for a little holiday fun, on April 16th between 11am-3pm hop on over and visit the Easter Bunny!

Friday, Saturday, & Sunday: 9am-4pm
4835 West Eau Gallie Blvd.
Melbourne, FL 32934

Do you know about a hidden gem that I missed! Let me know so I can check it out and spread the word on Facebook

You can indulge in old school cheesy fun and still remain totally current by capping the outing off with a stop at Chez Quan’s (located just up the road) for some delicious Thai & Latin cuisine. Treetop Trek Aerial Adventures

Been to the Brevard Zoo lately? The bodies you might have noticed zipping above are the “Trekkers”. It is a hoot. People watching and adrenaline combined! Trekkers can “zip, climb, and crawl” through a Florida landscape with an aerial view of zoo critters below. There are three different zipline levels to choose from as well as a “Chutes & Ladders” option for little ones 4-8 years old. (*12 and under require a chaperone.)

Central Florida Spring Cleaning Checklist

The sun is shining, birds are singing, flowers are blooming - ah yes, spring is here! In the Space Coast we are fortunate enough to enjoy gorgeous sunny weather year round, but this time of year is still my favorite. Now that the hustle and bustle of the holidays are over, it feels good to slow down a little.

Since I have a little more free time in the spring, I like to freshen up my home. Whether you spend a weekend fully focusing on your “spring cleaning” or prefer to spread out your tasks throughout the month, nothing feels better than a clean house.

Here are some of my “Live Love Melbourne” go-to spring cleaning tasks:

  • A great place to start is by dusting - EVERYTHING! Don’t just hit the usual places, now is the time to wipe down ceiling fans, baseboards, and anywhere else you might normally neglect.
  • After all of the holiday foot traffic, your floors could probably use a little love. I usually opt for hiring a professional to come give my floors a deep cleaning. If that is not an option I do it myself by making sure to move and clean under all of my furniture.
  • While I have the vacuum out I like to give all upholstered furniture a nice vacuum detail as well, paying extra attention to pillows and under cushions.
  • Your bed goes through a lot of nightly wear and tear. Vacuum and flip your mattress. You can even sprinkle your mattress with baking soda (leave on for an hour or two) before vacuuming for an extra clean. Now is also the time to clean any bedding such as comforters and pillows (check care label for instructions).
  • Your closet could probably use a refresh. Sort clothes to keep, donate, and repair. Then reorganize in a way that makes sense to you. The Container Store offers all kinds of storage maximizing solutions to keep your closet clean!
  • Clean out your kitchen by tossing any expired food items in your refrigerator and pantry. Wipe down all shelves and reorganize.
  • While you’re at it, turn your oven to “self-clean”. Just make sure to clean any big spills ahead of time.
  • Give your bathroom some extra love. Cover your shower or tub with ample amount of cleaner and let it sit while completing other tasks. Then circle back and get scrubbing!
  • You’ve probably recently filed your taxes, so now is the perfect time to organize your important documents. Clean up your home office by tossing any papers you no longer need, and file away important documents like your tax return information.

  • Freshen up your garden and landscaping. The University of Florida has a great "Florida Gardening Calendar" with recommendations on what to plant depending on your region and time of year.
  • Wash away that window grim! Between the salt air and seasonal pollen, your windows could probably use a good scrub. Start by washing the windows (inside & out). Make sure to also rinse your screens and wipe down the window sills.
  • Now that your windows are sparkling, check all windows and doors for gaps. Note any peeled paint (this could indicate water leaks). Re-seal any gaps between the frame and wall.
  • When is the last time you cleaned your trash can? It’s probably been awhile! Get rid of germs by hosing down your cans inside and out, spraying the inside and handle with disinfectant, and rinsing. (Flip upside down to dry).
  • Refresh your patio or pool area by giving your outdoor furniture a spruce. Usually mild dishwashing detergent is great for most fabrics, but make sure to check your care labels. Now is also a great time to sweep away any debris or cobwebs.

  • Sometimes a trip to Bed Bath & Beyond for some new essentials is in order. Whether it’s new bedding, fresh towels, that fancy espresso maker you’ve been wanting, or a new lounger for your pool - little home additions can really freshen up your space.
  • You can also make some inexpensive changes to your home by swapping out faucets or door knobs, adding fresh paint, installing new light fixtures, and more!

Did I miss something? What’s on your spring cleaning “to-do list”?

The $450 Question: Should I get Flood Insurance?

The $450 Question: Should I get Flood Insurance?

The majority of Brevard County is not in a “flood zone”. No Flood Zone = No Required Flood Insurance. However, flooding is one of nature’s most common natural disasters. As a result I’m frequently asked if homeowners should purchase flood insurance anyway. My answer: “If the average cost is $450 per year or less, it’s not a bad idea for total peace of mind.”

Flooding can occur anywhere, anytime. Even if you are not required to have flood insurance, you should still give serious consideration as to whether you should still purchase it. Homeowners insurance may cover fire and wind damage, but it almost never covers damage from flooding. Damages associated with floods can easily total $25,000 or more! (Sometimes MUCH more.)

A flood insurance policy can cover:

Flood debris cleanup

Structural damages (walls, ceilings, floors, stairways, etc.)

Household appliances/utilities damaged by floodwater

Wall to wall carpeting, tile, and other flooring surfaces

Added coverages may also be available for dislocation expenses such as rent, hotel stays, meals, etc.

Brevard County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, which means all residents qualify to apply for NFIP flood insurance. Without flood insurance, losses must be covered out of pocket. Some limited relief might be obtainable through government aid, but government assistance is not automatically available. It is only offered when the President makes an official disaster declaration. (Less than half of flooding events are “declared disasters”.)

Additionally, property owners living in lower risk areas may qualify for a “preferred risk” policy which provides coverage averaging around $450 per year.

Fortunately, there are many great insurance agents along the Space Coast! Over the years, I have loved working with Angel Huff at Allstate.  She is very responsive, answers all of my “dumb” questions quickly, and her quotes are the most competitive pricing I have seen! Give her a call: 321-254-6829

Curious if a house you are considering requires flood insurance? Just put the address in here.

Space Coast Strawberry Patches

Space Coast Strawberry Patches

What did one strawberry say to the other? “If you weren’t so fresh, we wouldn’t be in this jam!”

Okay, okay - bad jokes aside, it’s currently sunny and 75 degrees! The perfect summer weather, or in our case the perfect Florida winter weather! That also means it’s strawberry picking season in Central Florida!

Along the Space Coast, strawberry season starts in late December and continues all the way until early June. However, prime season is usually during March and April. Personally, I like to get a head start and beat the heat. Plus, who doesn’t love fresh strawberries?!

Whether you’re looking for a fun family afternoon, want to get outside to enjoy some fresh air, or even plan a unique Valentine’s Day date (strawberries and champagne anyone?), strawberry picking fits the bill. In Brevard, we are fortunate enough to have some great farms within an hour or less making strawberry picking an easy day trip.

Before you embark on your farm adventure, there are a few things you should remember for a successful day of strawberry picking. First, remember to apply sunscreen and bug spray before you go. Second, bring cash - it’s worth noting that some farms don’t take credit cards. You also might want to pack a few snacks and drinks - especially if you are planning on bringing little ones who might become cranky. Most importantly, make sure you contact the farm in advance to make sure there are strawberries available and to confirm operating hours.

Below are some of my favorite strawberry patch farms near Brevard. Happy picking! :)

Countryside Citrus

Countryside Citrus

Stop on by the Countryside Strawberry Patch between 9:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Saturday. Their strawberries are usually priced at $3/lb. Countryside Citrus is conveniently located in Vero Beach just north of the Fairgrounds!

Vero Beach, FL 32967

Sledd’s U Pick

Sledd's U Pick

The best thing about Sledd’s is that it is family owned and operated. I usually go about twice a year, and I’m always made to feel welcomed when greeted with a friendly face. Strawberries are usually $2.50/lb, but they have other fruits and veggies as well.

Burkholm Road and Dixie Way
Mimis, FL 32754
(321) 268-8978
(321) 537-7003

Pappy’s Patch

Pappy's Patch

Located in Oviedo near Orlando, Florida, Pappy’s Patch is a “must visit” for most Central Floridians. Strawberries are $3/lb from December - April, and blueberries are $4/lb from April-June.  (Cash only.)

700 Florida Ave
Oviedo, FL 32765
(407) 366-8512

Avalon Hydroponics

Avalon Hydroponics

Located right in Melbourne, Avalon Hydroponics is the perfect spot for some weekend berry picking (they also have other fruits and veggies). Official hours are from 9:30am-2:30pm every Saturday and Sunday. You can also stay up to date with the info on their Facebook page

930 John Rhodes Blvd.
Melbourne, FL 32904
(844) 920-9156

Remember - wherever you decide to go, call first to make sure they are not picked out. I’d love to see your strawberry picking photos! Feel free to share them with me on Facebook. (@HollyMaddenRealtor).

10 Brevard Burger Joints You Have To Try

Some nights cooking dinner is just not going to happen, but I don’t really feel like getting dressed up and “going out” either. The first thing that comes to my mind on those types of nights is, “Let’s go for a BURGER”. To me, burgers have always invoked the image of comfy clothes, a casual atmosphere, a big icy Coca-Cola...or maybe even a big icy mug of beer!

Having worked and played in Melbourne Beach for many years, I’ve tried my fair share of burger spots. I’ve decided to put that knowledge to good use by offering up my 10 favorite  burger joints in Brevard. Fine dining is great, cooking at home is rewarding, and fast food can be convenient - but sometimes you just really crave a nice juicy burger! Whether you prefer a gourmet burger creation, or just some good old backyard grill flavor - I’ve got the spot just for you!

1. Too Cool Café

This local favorite is serving up delicious burgers with seriously laid back style. My personal favorite is the Goat Cheese burger. So yummy! If burgers aren’t your thing you can also opt for their brunch menu which features bottomless mimosas and eggs bennie

2. The Burger Place

This is not your average burger place. At Chef Larry’s, reservations strongly encouraged. The best thing about their burger is the mix of different types of beef and Chef Larry’s special spice. Truly outstanding!

6. The Burger Inn

This little burger shack is an oldie but goodie! With a retro nod to the classic 1950’s diner, you’d be hard pressed not to fall in love with this spot. Besides, you simply can’t go wrong with a plain old burger with a side of fried shroom’s!
